At least seven individuals, including women and children, have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack by suspected armed herders on the Agbo Vengav community in Udam, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, was carried out by gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen, according to local sources. Several other residents remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of the assault.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that among the victims was a young girl, while her mother was abducted by the attackers. Her whereabouts remain unknown as of the time of reporting.
“The attackers invaded the community around 1:00 a.m. while most residents were asleep,” the source stated. “Seven bodies have so far been recovered, and efforts are ongoing to locate those who are still missing.”
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered.
The attack marks yet another violent incident in the region, which has seen recurrent clashes between armed herders and local communities.
