A landmark bill seeking the creation of Tiga State from the current Kano State is ready for presentation at the Senate.

The proposed legislation, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024,” aims to alter the country’s constitution to create a new state.

Senator Kawu Sumaiman AbdulRahman (Kano South) is sponsoring the bill, which was listed on the Order Paper for Wednesday’s plenary but was adjourned due to the death of a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi.

Kano State, located in the North West geopolitical zone, has 44 local government areas and is one of the states with the highest voting population in the country. If passed, the bill would lead to the creation of a new state, Tiga, from the existing Kano State.

The move comes as the North West zone already has seven states, while other zones have six states each, except the South East, which has five states.

ABN TV reports that there are also agitations for creating one additional state in the South East region.

The Senate is expected to consider the bill when plenary resumes on Thursday.

The proposed creation of Tiga State has sparked interest and debate among Nigerians, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome of the legislative process.
