A joint security operation in Niger State has successfully rescued 10 kidnapped victims following a fierce gun battle with bandits in Mai-Laka village, Mariga Local Government Area, along the Bangi–Kotonkoro road, the police have confirmed.
The dramatic rescue, which took place on Sunday, February 1, was hailed as a major victory in the ongoing campaign against kidnapping and rural banditry in the state.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Niger State Command, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, said the operation was executed through the combined efforts of security personnel who intercepted the criminals around 8 a.m.
“On Sunday, at about 8 a.m., a joint security team intercepted and engaged suspected kidnappers and bandits in a gun duel at Mai-Laka village along Bangi–Kotonkoro road,” Abiodun said.
He explained that the intense exchange of gunfire forced the bandits to flee, abandoning their captives in the process.
“As a result of the gun battle, the abductors abandoned some kidnapped victims and escaped, leading to the rescue of about 10 victims,” he added.
According to police reports, the rescued individuals had been abducted from Yauri, Dusai, Dogon-Fadama, and Yabawa villages, while several motorcycles used by the fleeing bandits were recovered at the scene.
Abiodun further revealed that clearance and surveillance operations have been intensified across the affected areas to completely root out criminal elements and prevent further attacks.
“The security team has sustained monitoring and clearance operations to rid the area of bandits and safeguard lives and property,” he assured.
The successful rescue operation has been widely commended by residents, as security agencies continue to step up coordinated efforts to restore peace and safety across Niger State’s troubled communities.
