S/Africa Negotiating Firmly With US On Tariffs, Says President

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Friday that the country will use the one-week delay in the implementation of the US’s 30-percent tariffs to intensify negotiations aimed at avoiding the penalties and protecting jobs.

South Africa is among nearly 70 countries targeted by President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on exports, which were initially set to take effect on Friday but have been postponed until August 7. The United States is South Africa’s second-largest trading partner after China, and according to South Africa’s central bank governor, Lesetja Kganyago, the tariffs could threaten around 100,000 jobs.

“Within this remaining window, we are hopeful of finding a resolution,” Ramaphosa told reporters. “Intensive negotiations are now underway.”

“Our mission is to negotiate as firmly and effectively as possible with the United States,” he added. “Our main goal is to save jobs.”

The tariffs would most severely affect South Africa’s agriculture and automotive industries, adding strain to the nation’s already high unemployment rate, which exceeds 30 percent.

While engaging in talks with Washington, South Africa is also seeking to diversify its export markets, as Ramaphosa noted that relying too heavily on one partner is risky.

South Africa’s recent proposal to the US includes importing American liquefied natural gas and certain agricultural goods, according to the trade ministry. Additionally, South African companies have pledged investments in US mining and metals recycling sectors, along with plans for joint ventures in critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural machinery.
