Rwanda To Receive 250 US Migrants Under New Deportation Deal

Rwanda has agreed to take in as many as 250 migrants from the United States, according to a government announcement made on Tuesday.

However, officials did not disclose who exactly would be covered under the agreement.

The move comes amid ongoing efforts by Washington to accelerate deportations. The Trump administration has been pursuing controversial deals to relocate migrants to third countries, including South Sudan and Eswatini.

This new arrangement follows the collapse of a previous agreement between Rwanda and the United Kingdom, which would have seen Kigali receive migrants deported from the UK. That deal was abandoned after the British government that brokered it lost the 2024 general election.

“Rwanda has agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants,” said government spokesperson Yolande Makolo in a statement to AFP.

She added that the Rwandan government will retain the right to approve each individual case for resettlement.

Makolo declined to provide further details or a timeline, stating that more information would be shared once finalized.
