A Russian missile strike on a railway station in eastern Ukraine has killed one mechanic and wounded four other workers, Ukraine’s national rail company announced on Tuesday.
“Russian terrorists inflicted a massive strike on the railway infrastructure of Lozova,” Ukrainian Railways said in a Telegram post.
“A duty mechanic of one of the units was killed, four more railway workers were wounded. All the wounded are receiving necessary medical care.”
The attack caused significant disruption to rail services, with several trains rerouted in response.
Lozova’s mayor, Sergiy Zelensky, said additional casualties were reported, including children, and that residential areas were damaged.
“Lozova has survived the most massive attack since the beginning of the war,” Zelensky wrote in a Facebook post.
In a separate incident, two people were injured in a Russian drone strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia, according to the regional military administration.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported that air defense units had successfully intercepted 29 Iranian-made Shahed drones overnight across the north and east of the country.
U.S. Deadline and Diplomatic Efforts
The renewed wave of Russian attacks comes as a deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for Moscow to begin taking concrete steps toward ending the war approaches. The Trump administration has warned that failure to act could lead to unspecified new sanctions.
Efforts to reach a ceasefire through diplomatic channels have so far failed. Three rounds of peace talks hosted in Istanbul have made little progress, with negotiators from both sides remaining sharply divided on key issues.
Amid these developments, Trump confirmed that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Russia this week and is expected to meet with President Vladimir Putin.
The announcement follows rising tensions between Washington and Moscow, stoked in part by an online exchange between Trump and former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. Trump recently disclosed that two U.S. nuclear submarines he ordered into the region are now in position, though their exact location remains undisclosed.
