Russia Erects Concrete Shelters In Kursk

Local authorities are undertaking measures to improve civilian safety as a result of ongoing Ukrainian incursions into Russia’s Kursk region.

Acting Governor Alexei Smirnov announced the installation of concrete shelters in crowded areas, including bus stations, in the city of Kursk and the towns of Zheleznogorsk and Kurchatov.

Since August 6th, when Ukrainian forces breached the border, fighting has disrupted the region, leading to the evacuation of numerous residents. The city of Kursk itself has a population of approximately 450,000.

Rising worries about the safety of the Kursk nuclear power station in Kurchatov has led to the erection of the shelters.

While Russia has accused Ukraine of plotting an attack on the facility, Kyiv denies these claims. A visit by Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is scheduled for later this month to assess the situation.
