Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu is a new-generation political bigwig whose future in the Nigerian political terrain is seemingly bright.
Despite being in his early 50s, his foray into the murky waters of politics has got people talking about what a man of poise and finesse like him is looking.
He has always told those who care to listen that his entry into politics is not for personal gain but to contribute his quota to bettering the lives of his people of Bende Federal Constituency.
With an impeccable scorecard, he has built his profile politically setting unprecedented records. Today, the Abia State-born Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly has, once again, crested his name in gold with his declaration on the floor of the House where he moved a motion for members to slash their salaries by 50 per cent to stand in solidarity with Nigerians amid biting economy and hunger.
After raising the motion, other members who saw the sincerity of purpose in the motion also agreed to adjust to the new reality for six months to show Nigerians that members of the House of Representatives care for their constituents.
Sources say the motion could only be spearheaded by him because of his cordial relationship with his colleagues. They also cited the fact that he gives listening ears and opens his doors to all sundry on development and national matters as more reason why no one opposed the motion.
He is also working assiduously to bring peace to the Southeast. This led to his campaign for peace in the region months ago. He also aims at driving religious heads, monarchs to political leaders, and opinion leaders from across Nigeria to uphold peace and stability within the Southeast to halt kidnappings and killings, among other security issues, affecting the growth and development of the region.
