Member representing Bende Federal Constituency Abia state, Rep. Benjamin Kalu has commended Governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu over the ongoing Geometric Power Project at the Osisioma Industrial Layout, Aba saying when fully activated, the people will get to know the benefit of the project.
He said Gov. Ikpeazu has done well in this regard, adding that he is setting the standard for other states to follow.
The lawmaker spoke on a radio programme Ben Kalu’s Mandate in Umuahia Abia State capital streamed by ABN TV and Radio shortly before the House voted on a number of issues for amendments in the 1999 Constitution.
One of the Bills passed into law was the bill seeking to give states legal backing to generate, transmit and distribute power without necessarily relying on the national grid.
Aba is said to be currently getting a maximum of 50 megawatts of power from the National Grid but the ongoing Geometric Power Project is said to have capacity to produce 140 megawatts of electricity which is more than enough to provide steady and sustainable power to Aba and its environs.
While commending the governor, the House of Representatives member said the newly passed Bill will be the bedrock for Abia to benefit in the freedom granted to states to generate their own power.
“Abians will in no distant understand what the governor has done with regards to our economy. It is indeed a very giant step. I commend the governor for all the interventions that he has made. I am proud of this achievement by the governor,” he said.
The Chairman/CEO of Geometric Power Ltd, Professor Barth Nnaji last month told Gov. Ikpeazu that long before the contractual problem that led to the stalling of the project, the sum of 500 Million Dollars had already been invested in the project, adding that this is the largest economic project in the entire South East of Nigeria.
The former Minister of Power while applauding the governor for reviving the project also announced that six months from now, the plant will be commissioned for supply of power to the people of Abia State.
