Remains Of Late Buhari Arrives At Daura Residence

The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, ahead of his burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

A large crowd of mourners gathered at the former leader’s hometown to pay their final respects as preparations for the funeral prayer, to be led by the Chief Imam of Katsina State, were underway.

The body, which departed the United Kingdom earlier on Tuesday, was flown into Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, where it was received by President Bola Tinubu. Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

President Tinubu arrived at the airport from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and conducted an inspection of the guard of honour. The Nigerian Air Force plane carrying Buhari’s remains landed at exactly 1:51 p.m.

The late president’s remains were accompanied to Nigeria by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, his widow Aisha Buhari, and close family members.

At the airport, a solemn reception was held with several dignitaries in attendance, including President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former Nigerien President Issoufou Mahamadou, and former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

A team of nine senior military officers served as pallbearers, coordinated by Major General Mike Alechenu. They included:

The casket, draped in the Nigerian flag, was placed on a trolley and wheeled through a full military guard of honour made up of six officers and 96 soldiers. The procession moved in solemn cadence to the hymn “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”

President Tinubu and other dignitaries followed closely behind the casket in a dignified, silent procession.

The remains were then placed in a military hearse for the final journey to Daura, about an hour away, where funeral prayers and the interment ceremony are scheduled to take place.

Buhari’s state funeral featured full military honours, including a symbolic 21-gun salute.
