Real Madrid have completed the signing of England international defender Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a contract running until 2031, the Spanish club confirmed on Friday.
The 26-year-old right-back, who recently helped Liverpool clinch the Premier League title, had been approaching the final stages of his contract at Anfield. However, Real Madrid opted to pay a transfer fee to secure his services earlier, ensuring his availability for the upcoming Club World Cup.
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Alexander-Arnold rose to prominence at his boyhood club, amassing 352 appearances. He played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and was instrumental in their 2020 Premier League title win.
The move sees Alexander-Arnold reunite with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who was recently named Real Madrid’s new head coach, taking over from Carlo Ancelotti.
Given Alexander-Arnold’s deep ties to Liverpool, his departure announcement triggered backlash from a section of supporters. He was reportedly booed during the team’s penultimate match of the season.
But the mood shifted dramatically at Anfield last Sunday following public appeals from key figures at the club. “After club figures, including former manager Jürgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah, urged fans to remember the contribution he has made to Liverpool’s success over the last six years, he was roundly cheered when he lifted the Premier League trophy at Anfield last Sunday.”
His arrival comes as Real Madrid aims to strengthen a squad that ended the season without a major trophy. The team faced persistent problems at right-back, with Dani Carvajal sidelined due to a long-term knee injury and winger Lucas Vazquez struggling in the unfamiliar defensive role.
Alexander-Arnold, often praised for his vision and attacking capabilities, has faced criticism for lapses in defensive concentration. Nevertheless, his dynamic presence on the right flank is expected to offer a significant upgrade to Madrid’s backline.
He is set to make his debut for Los Blancos on June 18 in Miami, when they take on Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in their opening Club World Cup fixture.
Real Madrid have also added to their defensive options by signing Spanish centre-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, continuing efforts to reinforce a backline that was plagued by injuries throughout the season.
