President Tinubu Signs Nigeria Data Protection Bill, 2023 Into Law

The Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 establishes a legal framework for personal information protection and data protection practice in Nigeria.

According to NAN, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), stated this at the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) validation workshop in Abuja.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari transmitted the measure to the Senate and House of Representatives for consideration and passage on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, via letter.

“Now an Act, the new law establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and replaces the NDPB established by former President Buhari in February 2022,” He said.

The Commission will be chaired by a National Commissioner who will be in charge of regulating the handling of personal data.
