PDP Suspends Secretary Of South-South Zone

Chief Felix Omemu, the Zonal Secretary of the PDP South-South Zonal Executive Committee, has been suspended for a month due to allegations of misconduct and unapproved media statements that cast doubt on the ZEC meeting that was held in Benin on Saturday.

Omemu had earlier issued a statement in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, declaring the meeting convened by the party’s South-South Vice Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, as illegal.

He argued that, according to the PDP constitution, a ZEC meeting requires approval from the Zonal Working Committee, which, he claimed, had neither deliberated nor agreed to convene such a meeting.

At the South-South Zonal Executive Committee meeting in Benin, Edo State, factional Speaker of the River State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, moved the motion for Omemu’s suspension.

The motion was seconded by the member representing the Ogoja/Yala constituency in the House of Representatives, Godwin Offiono.

Amaewhule accused Omemu of misconduct, breach of trust, and fostering division among members.

Amaewhule said, “Chief Felix Omemu has been suspended, and a disciplinary committee was set up to investigate him.

“Omemu’s action is illegal and an attempt to cause disunity and dissuade members from attending the South-South ZEC meeting in Benin.”

Following the suspension, PDP zonal legal adviser George Turnah was immediately appointed to function as the acting zonal secretary.

On his part, Orbih commended the ZEC for suspending Omemu, saying the move is a right step in the right direction aimed at repositioning the party and curbing the excesses of leaders and members of the party who are bent on causing disunity in the party.

The meeting was attended by its zonal chairman, senators, and House of Representatives members from five states in the South-South, as well as delegates, except from Akwa Ibom State.
