The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the purported suspension of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, by the Abia State chapter of the party, declaring it null, void, and of no effect, ABN TV reports.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the NWC emphasized that the suspension violates the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) and is inconsistent with the party’s laid-down rules.
The NWC firmly stated that no State Working Committee (SWC) has the power to suspend or take disciplinary action against a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party without the approval of the NWC.
Citing Section 57 (7) of the PDP Constitution, the statement explained that:
“Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors, or members of the National Assembly.”
The NWC stressed that this provision makes it clear that the Abia State Chapter has no authority to suspend Senator Wabara, given that he is a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT).
Describing the action as reckless and unconstitutional, the PDP cautioned those behind the decision to retrace their steps, warning that the NWC will not hesitate to take disciplinary action to preserve the party’s stability and uphold the sanctity of its constitution.
“The PDP therefore condemns the purported suspension of Senator Wabara as reckless, unconstitutional, and cautions those behind this act in defiance of the PDP Constitution to retrace their steps,” the statement read.
The NWC urged all PDP leaders, stakeholders, members, and supporters in Abia State, the South East, and across Nigeria to disregard the suspension, assuring that the matter is under the purview of the national leadership.
