PDP Chairmanship: Governors, Party Leaders, Others Rally Round David Mark

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds its national convention on October 30, it was learnt that efforts are being made to ensure that the former President of the Senate, David Mark, emerged as the national chairman of the party.

It was further learnt that prominent leaders in the party including serving governors have begun serious consensus building to facilitate his emergence. Mark was said to have given his consent to several groups of political leaders within the party including some serving and former governors, former ministers, among others, to drum support for him to emerge as the next chairman of PDP.

The chairmanship position, which is currently in the South, is zoned to the North, following the swapping of National Working Committee (NWC) positions between the North and the South.

Recall that it was rumoured that some Northern leaders, including a former governor of Katsina State, Shema Ibrahim; former Jigawa governor, Suleiman Lamido, were reported to have indicated interests in occupying PDP’s number one position.

It was gathered that the party is making serious efforts to ensure that its national convention is hitch-free.

To this end, the party leaders, it was gathered, have begun serious consultation ahead of the October 30 date.

The consultation, according to sources, recorded some progress when Mark reportedly informed the group of leaders that he has no objection to their advice that he should run for the chairmanship position.

At the level of the zone, it was gathered that other North Central states have already withdrawn interests for Benue State to produce the national chairman.
