Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to “avenge the blood of our innocent martyrs” following deadly attacks that left at least 31 people dead and dozens more wounded in India’s assault on Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Heavy artillery exchanges have been reported along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing Indian- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India claims that at least 13 people were killed and several others wounded in Indian-administered Kashmir as a result of Pakistani shelling.
India described the military action as part of “Operation Sindoor,” which it said targeted “terrorist” infrastructure. However, Pakistan has vehemently denied these claims, asserting that the Indian missile strikes hit mosques and civilian areas, resulting in numerous casualties, which it condemned as a “blatant act of war.”
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors have been escalating following a deadly attack on April 22 in India’s Pahalgam area of Kashmir, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the incident, further intensifying the strain between the two nations.
