The Owerri Club has removed its Management Committee led by Chief Charles Okeke and appointed a five-member Caretaker Committee, with Ezinwa Onyebuchi Obinwa named as Interim Chairman.
The decision was reached during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) convened by financial members of the club in line with Rule 17(cii), page 31 of the Owerri Club Rules. The meeting followed the Management Committee’s failure to honor multiple statutory requirements, including the convening of bi-annual general meetings to present audited financial reports.
According to a resolution from the meeting, the refusal of the Okeke-led committee to summon the EGM despite a formal demand by over 30 financial members was seen as a deliberate effort to block inquiries into alleged financial mismanagement and disregard for club rules.
Citing the need to “preserve the club from disintegration” and restore probity, accountability, and respect for the authority of the Registered Trustees, members resolved to dissolve the current management with immediate effect and constitute an interim Caretaker Committee.
The newly appointed Caretaker Committee includes:
Ezinwa Onyebuchi Obinwa – Chairman
Chief Chidi Anyaso – Member
Emeka Onyema – Member
Chief Emma Ebili – Member
Ik Ogbonna – Secretary
The committee is expected to serve for an initial three-month period and is tasked with:
Reviewing and ratifying the revised Club Rules
Auditing the club’s accounts
Investigating the activities of the previous management
Conducting credible elections for new leadership
The resolution emphasized the importance of restoring peace and camaraderie among members, as well as upholding the constitutional integrity of the club.
The Registered Trustees of Owerri Club, affiliated clubs, security agencies, and the club’s bankers have all been officially notified.
