The Challenge Initiative (TCI) a non-governmental organisation platform has said that about 850 out of 100,000 women die during delivery annually in public facilities in Abia state.
TCI also said about 177 women die from 100,000 births from private facilities.
The organization while speaking with ABN TV through its Demand Generation Technical Lead, Priscilla Omang Acholonu, in Umuahia during a seminar organised for media practitioners on family planning messaging said this data was obtained during a recent survey in the state.
Acholonu while stating that the number of women Abia state loses during childbirth attributed it to low budget.

While insisting that N240 million budgeted for the health sector in 2020 is far below what is budgeted for other areas added that health is supposed to gulp a larger chunk of budgetary allocation for the state.
She expressed dismay that the meager amount budgeted for health is not being released.
She appealed to government to increase the allocation for health and also ensure that it is implemented to ensure that the health of mothers and prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
