A total of 28,213 applicants have applied for the 4,000 teaching positions advertised by the Abia State Government.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu said the recruitment exercise, the second batch of teacher employment, opened on November 6 and closed on November 29, 2025. Applicants were allowed a verification window, which closes this week, after which they will sit for computer-based tests and interviews.
He recalled that the state plans to recruit 4,000 additional teachers, adding to the 5,394 employed last year.
The commissioner also announced the inauguration of the Abia State Safe Schools Steering Committee to enhance security in schools and coordinate the implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration.
On digital reforms, Kanu highlighted key milestones, including a document digitisation bureau for land records, a centralised online recruitment platform, a redesigned state government website, and the rollout of the e-Health Project in six pilot institutions. He added that laptops have been distributed to senior government officials.
Kanu said monitoring of school resumption would be intensified, noting progress on mass school and smart school projects, with at least two expected to be commissioned by February.
He also revealed that the state’s urban mass transit scheme, which began on December 24, 2025, has recorded strong public response, with over 31,500 passengers benefiting from free rides during the pilot phase. Full commercial operations are expected soon.
