A shocking discovery has been made at the Abia Line Network Motor Park in Umuahia, where an office building has been constructed directly on top of an abandoned railway track, ABN TV reports.
The track, previously used by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, has been out of use for years.
According to sources, the Nigerian Railway Corporation abandoned the track and has since shifted its focus to other regions, with plans to commence work in the South East of Nigeria.
However, the abandoned track has been repurposed, with buildings constructed on top of it, including the office building in question.
The investigation, prompted by a trending online photo, revealed that the building was erected during Senator T.A. Orji’s tenure as a Governor of Abia State by one Mr. Ugochukwu Uwaeke.
The structure appears to be a permanent building, with a roof and walls, and is situated mere inches from the train tracks.
Eyewitnesses expressed concern and fear, citing the potential for a catastrophic accident. “It’s a disaster waiting to happen. What if a train suddenly starts operating on this track again?” said passenger Mr. Joe.
Residents and passersby are left wondering how this was allowed to happen, questioning whether it was a result of ignorance, desperation, or sheer madness.
ABN TV reached out to the General Manager of Abia Line Network company, Deaconess Onyekachi, who promised to provide a response.
This alarming discovery highlights the need for increased vigilance and accountability in ensuring public safety in Abia State. The Nigerian Railway Corporation’s abandonment of the track and the subsequent construction of buildings on top of it raises questions about the coordination between government agencies and private developers.
As the Nigerian Railway Corporation prepares to commence work in the South East, concerns about the safety and viability of existing infrastructure have been brought to the forefront.
