Otti Flags Off Construction Of 15MVA Injection Substations To Transform Power Supply In Umuahia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Wednesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for two 7.5MVA injection substations totalling 15MVA to significantly boost electricity supply across Umuahia and neighbouring communities.

The projects include: A 7.5MVA, 33/11kV injection substation by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) under the Federal Government’s NIPP programme, and

Another 7.5MVA injection substation to be built directly by the Abia State Government as contained in the proposed 2026 budget.

Speaking at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Governor Otti said the project is part of the administration’s comprehensive energy reform, aimed at solving the state’s long-standing power challenges.

He disclosed that the state-funded substation will be completed within three months January to March 2026 while urging NDPHC to shorten its project timeline from nine to six months so that both substations can be commissioned simultaneously in June.

Otti thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for opening the power sector to state participation and praised NDPHC for selecting Abia for strategic power infrastructure.

Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, and several federal lawmakers commended the Governor for prioritising power, describing electricity as the bedrock of industrial growth.

Representatives of NDPHC described the project as a crucial boost to national and regional power distribution.
