Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially launched the Abia State Duct Infrastructure Development Project at the Aba Town Hall, describing it as a landmark initiative to transform Abia into a technology-driven and digitally connected economy.
The project, which is being executed in partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), will see the development of a modern, interconnected underground duct network across major cities, beginning with Aba and Umuahia. The infrastructure will serve as the foundation for high-speed broadband connectivity and the deployment of advanced digital services throughout the state.
Governor Otti said the initiative aligns with his administration’s vision to position Abia as a key player in Nigeria’s emerging digital economy, enabling citizens and institutions to fully participate in the 21st-century global marketplace.
“This project will connect homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, and government institutions to a broadband superhighway that supports e-learning, e-health, e-governance, and enterprise innovation,” the governor stated.
According to him, the state’s partnership with WIOCC represents a strategic investment in Abia’s digital future, ensuring reliable internet infrastructure that will attract global technology investors, stimulate local innovation, and create thousands of jobs for young people.
Governor Otti explained that the project will not only strengthen Abia’s technology ecosystem but also boost commerce, education, healthcare, and security through smart infrastructure and digital inclusion.
He added that the initiative is in line with his government’s broader commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, emphasizing that every part of the state will benefit from the digital transformation.
“We are building a modern digital infrastructure that ensures no community is left behind. Abia is ready to compete and collaborate with the best in the global technology space,” Otti affirmed.
The Abia State Duct Infrastructure Development Project is expected to serve as a catalyst for broadband expansion, tech-driven entrepreneurship, and long-term economic growth, particularly in Aba’s growing innovation and creative sectors.
