Paul Oyewole, a 43-year-old pastor, allegedly faked his own obituary on the social media platform WhatsApp in order to avoid repaying a $3 million debt owed to a church member.
According to Vanguard, Oyewole was arraigned on Wednesday at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ondo Town, Ondo, on charges of fraudulently obtaining $3 million from one Boyede Emmanuel with the promise to repay the money within seven days, which he failed to do.
The defendant falsely published his obituary on WhatsApp after sending a fake bank alert, according to Police Prosecutor Akao Moremi.
He was also said to have “threatened the complainant on phone, with the intent to intimidate him and also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace, by stripping himself naked in front of the house of the complainant.”
Oyewole has entered a not-guilty plea to the charges. He was granted N1 million bail with two N1 million sureties.
