Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for calm, compassion, and constructive dialogue following the recent violent incident in Okon-Aku, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
In a statement issued on January 7, 2026, Senator Kalu expressed deep concern over the development, describing the situation as painful and unfortunate. He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, those injured, and residents who suffered losses during the crisis.
“The people of Okon-Aku Ohafia are our brothers and sisters. Their pain is our collective pain. My thoughts and prayers are with the community during this difficult time,” he said.
The lawmaker commended the Abia State Police Command for its swift intervention which helped restore calm in the area. He also praised the Ohafia Council of Monarchs for their consistent efforts at mediation and reconciliation, noting that their leadership remains crucial to sustaining peace in the community.
Senator Kalu warned that continued violence would only worsen the situation, disrupt livelihoods, discourage investment, and undermine development in the area. He therefore urged all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and embrace dialogue.
“Violence only breeds further suffering and stalls progress. I urge all parties to lay down arms and allow constituted authorities and security agencies to facilitate a just and lasting resolution,” he stated.
Reaffirming his commitment to peace, Senator Kalu said he remains ready, in his capacity as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to support all genuine initiatives aimed at reconciliation, adherence to the rule of law, and the protection of lives and property in Okon-Aku and across Abia North Senatorial District.
He further called on Governor Alex Otti to urgently intervene to restore lasting peace in the community, stressing that such intervention should align with due process, transparency, and the traditions of the Ohafia people.
“Okon-Aku, like other communities in Abia North, is dear to me. It is important that we return to the path of peace, unity, and mutual respect that has always defined our people,” Senator Kalu added.
He concluded by emphasizing that healing, rebuilding trust, and peaceful coexistence remain the only viable path forward for the community.
