A commercial motorcyclist identified as Osinachi Asonye was brutally shot dead by fleeing armed robbers near the Abia State University (ABSU) Uturu campus in the early hours of Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Eyewitnesses told ABN TV that the robbers, who had just carried out a robbery operation in the area, opened fire on the unsuspecting Okada rider, mistaking him for someone attempting to intercept them.

They thought Osinachi was after them. He was just riding his bike along the road, but the robbers assumed he was coming to stop them and shot him immediately,” a source recounted.

According to multiple sources, after being shot, Osinachi quickly alighted from his motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot. However, the fatal impact of the bullet took its toll as he staggered a few steps before slumping to the ground and dying on the spot.

The tragic incident happened in a populated area not far from the university’s main gate, sparking fear and panic among students and local residents. The lifeless body of the victim was later evacuated by authorities.

ABN TV gathered that the deceased hailed from Ezi Ndi Onwa in Akoba Otampa, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. He was the third son of his parents and was said to be known for his hard work and calm disposition.

His sudden death has thrown his family and community into mourning, with many describing the act as wicked and senseless.

The killing has renewed calls for improved security around the ABSU Uturu axis, which has witnessed several cases of armed robbery and attacks in recent times.

As of the time of filing this report, the Abia State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement, but investigations have reportedly commenced to track down the fleeing suspects.
