Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, as a performer and exemplary leader, following the commissioning of the 46.36km Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Alayi–Abiriba Highway.
Speaking at the event held at Unity Church, Uzuakoli in Bende LGA on Friday, April 11, Chief Obasanjo praised Governor Otti for transforming a once deplorable road into a modern highway, calling him a “miracle worker.”
“You are a man of your word, a goal-getter, a performer. When I was told this road now takes 35 minutes from Umuahia to Abiriba, I said Alex Otti is a miracle worker,” Obasanjo said. He urged the people of Abia not to change a winning horse, stressing that good leaders like Otti are rare.
In his remarks, Governor Otti said the road project reflects his administration’s commitment to quality infrastructure and efficient governance.
“This commissioning is proof of our resolve to do things differently. We’ve improved travel time, enhanced security, and reduced transport costs,” the Governor said.
He emphasized the economic importance of the road, especially for farmers, traders, and rural dwellers, and announced it will now be known as Joe Irukwu Way in honour of the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President.
Lawmakers, government officials, and community leaders including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and others praised the Governor for delivering a project that will impact thousands across four LGAs.
The ceremony drew a large crowd of dignitaries, traditional rulers, clergy, and stakeholders who hailed the road as a transformative milestone in Abia’s development.
