‘No’ To Backdoor Deals, ‘Yes’ To Due Process” – ASUBEB Chairman Onuoha Says

The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has assured the public of strict transparency and accountability in the execution of its newly launched multi-year intervention projects across the state.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ABN TV on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, said that the procurement process for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) intervention projects from 2020 to 2023 is being handled with the highest level of openness and integrity.

“To avoid any form of compromise, the procurement process has been placed fully in the hands of the procurement unit,” she stated. “In addition, we have involved independent observers, including representatives from UBEC, civil society organizations, and the Office of the Auditor-General to ensure full compliance with due process.”

She emphasized that Governor Alex Otti’s administration does not tolerate shady dealings, especially in the education sector, which has received a record 20% of the state budget allocation.

“We are all on the same page when it comes to transparency. From the bidding process to project execution, we’ve made sure everything is guided by law and fairness,” she added.

Mrs. Onuoha further revealed that a robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system has been established to track project implementation in real time. “Contractors will be closely supervised, and we’ll hold regular review meetings to assess progress and address any gaps,” she said.

The ASUBEB boss reaffirmed the board’s commitment to Governor Otti’s vision of an accountable and education-driven administration, assuring the public that every naira spent will reflect in improved infrastructure and learning conditions in schools across Abia.
