Federal lawmaker, Hon. Obi Aguocha, the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency, has reiterated his firm stance on the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that his advocacy is deeply personal and morally driven, not politically motivated.
Speaking during a live interview on STANDPOINT, aired on Rapid FM and ABN TV, Aguocha disclosed that nearly 180 lawmakers have already co-signed a petition to President Bola Tinubu demanding Kanu’s unconditional release.
He narrated his long-standing relationship with Kanu, saying, “We grew up in the same community and attended the same schools. This is not just political. It is personal, and it is a matter of justice.”
Aguocha hailed the recent court ruling which struck out coerced statements against Kanu as a landmark victory. “The court recognized that statements obtained under duress are invalid. That was a major win,” he said.
Addressing speculation that his stand was politically calculated ahead of 2027, Aguocha responded: “If helping my brother gain freedom is politics, so be it. Even if I don’t run again, I will feel fulfilled knowing I did my part.”
