Nnamdi Kanu Faults Conviction From Sokoto Prison, Says Judgment Has “No Legal Basis” — Brother Reveals

Prince Emmanuel Kanu, younger brother to detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has disclosed details of a meeting held with his brother inside the Sokoto Medium Security Correctional Centre on Sunday, where Kanu is currently being held following his recent sentencing.

In a statement shared via his official Facebook page, Emmanuel said he met with Kanu alongside his lawyer, Dr. Maxwell Opara. During the visit, Kanu reportedly described his conviction as legally defective, insisting no individual can be sentenced under a repealed law.

According to the statement, Kanu expressed concern that his final written address, which focused on fair hearing, was not considered. He also alleged that the evidence relied upon by the court was neither part of the amended charge sheet nor tendered during trial.

Prince Emmanuel quoted Kanu as saying the court’s reliance on previously struck-out charges, particularly those dismissed earlier by Justice Binta Nyako, raised serious judicial concerns.

“Upon reviewing the judgment, he identified numerous errors that undermined the validity of his trial,” the statement read.

Kanu reportedly urged Nigerian judges, magistrates, lawyers, and legal scholars to carefully scrutinize the ruling and defend the integrity of the legal system, noting discrepancies between previous court decisions and the latest judgment.

He questioned why rulings from courts in Umuahia, Enugu, the Court of Appeal, United Nations working group, and even the Supreme Court, which stated that the law used against him was repealed, were ignored.

The IPOB leader also thanked Nigerians and supporters globally, praising those he described as voices of conscience.

“I am Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who will reject injustice, unfairness, and evil against anybody regardless of tribe, faith, or ethnicity. Injustice to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is injustice everywhere,” he stated.

Prince Emmanuel concluded by relaying Kanu’s appreciation for the continued prayers and support from the public, quoting him as saying, “Elohim bless you all.”

Kanu’s remarks come amid rising national debate and growing calls from lawmakers, civil society groups and political leaders for a political solution to his ongoing detention.
