The Nigerian Army has declared a three-day mourning period to honour 17 soldiers who were killed in a recent deadly attack in Kwana Dutse Local Government Area of Niger State.
The coordinated assault, which also affected military bases in Kaduna State, has sent shockwaves across the country. Armed assailants reportedly launched simultaneous attacks on the bases, resulting in significant casualties among military personnel.
In a statement released on Friday via its official website and social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Nigerian Army confirmed the fatalities and announced that the mourning period would run from June 25 to 27, 2025.
“This mourning period is a mark of respect and gratitude to the soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defence of our nation,” the statement read.
As part of the observance, all military institutions across the country have been directed to fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast. Personnel have also been instructed to honour the fallen soldiers by reflecting on their service and sacrifice.
The army extended its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, reaffirming its commitment to honouring the memory of those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
“This gesture reflects the deep value the Nigerian Army places on the lives and contributions of its personnel,” the statement added.
The mourning period, the army noted, is not only a tribute to the fallen but also a time for national reflection on the critical role of the armed forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s security and sovereignty.
As reported by The PUNCH, many stakeholders have echoed the importance of supporting military personnel and their families. They commended the army’s move, calling it a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made daily by those in uniform to protect the country.
