Nigerian Army Addresses Alleged Detention Of Journalist In Port Harcourt

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that it unlawfully detained an investigative journalist, Mr. Fisayo Soyombo, in Port Harcourt.

In a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division emphasized the need to clarify the situation amidst growing misinformation.

According to the statement, the journalist was apprehended during a military operation targeting illegal oil bunkering in the region. The operation, part of intensified efforts against pipeline vandalism and oil theft, led troops to an illegal oil bunkering site, where several arrests were made, including that of Mr. Soyombo.

The Army disclosed that the arrest was based on intelligence linking the site to a notorious gang involved in oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Mr. Soyombo and other suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to ascertain their roles in the illegal activities.

“Any claims suggesting that Mr. Soyombo’s arrest is unrelated to the ongoing anti-oil theft operations are baseless,” the statement read, urging media outlets to verify their reports before publication to prevent the spread of false information.
