Nigeria Records First Anthrax Case

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the country’s first incidence of Anthrax, a fatal zoonotic illness.

This was revealed in a statement made on Monday by the Federation’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Columba Vakuru.

He stated that the case was dictated in a private farm in Niger State’s Suleja Local Government Area.

He stated that the case was initially recorded on July 14, with animals showing signs of the sickness.

A laboratory test verified the sickness, according to the vet officer, and the farm has been quarantined.

“To this end, the federal and the Niger State governments have taken measures to ensure the outbreak is controlled and contained quickly in Nigeria,” Dr. Vakuru maintained.

According to him, the Federal Government also announced that plans are underway to conduct nationwide vaccinations of cattle, sheep, and goats against anthrax.

“Surveillance of anthrax will be heightened on livestock farms, markets, and abattoirs,” the Vet Officer added.
