Niger Closes Air Space Citing ‘Threat Of Intervention’

Niger Repulic’s military rulers announced Sunday that they had closed the country’s airspace, warning that any attempt to violate it would meet with an “energetic and immediate response.”

“Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through preparing neighbouring countries, Niger’s airspace is closed from this day on Sunday… for all aircraft until further notice,” the country’s new rulers said in a statement.
The statement came as the West African bloc ECOWAS’s deadline for returning control to democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum approached.

Last Sunday, ECOWAS issued an ultimatum to members of his personal protection detained at the presidency on July 26 to Niger’s new military leadership

Bazoum was detained at the presidency on July 26 by members of his personal protection.
