NFVCB Warns Skit Makers Against Contents That Have Same-sex Scenes

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has issued a warning cautioning Nigerian filmmakers and skit creators against producing and streaming content that is prohibited or not approved.

In an Instagram post on June 26, 2024, the agency expressed concerns about the activities of certain individuals it described as “unscrupulous” within the industry.

Specifically, the NFVCB highlighted the presence of same-sex content on popular social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter.

Emphasising compliance with Nigerian law, the NFVCB reminded filmmakers and content creators that any direct or indirect depiction of same-sex relationships is considered illegal.

The statement reads, “Filmmakers and content creators are advised that exhibiting same-sex relationships in Nigeria, whether directly or indirectly, constitutes an offence.”

Furthermore, the NFVCB noted that it is unlawful to distribute or publicly display any film content, including skits and musical videos, without first obtaining classification from the board.

“It is also prohibited to distribute or showcase any film or video content, including skits and musical videos, on any platform without seeking approval from the National Film and Video Censors Board,” part of the statement reads.
