The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has witnessed a leadership transition, as Dr. Nkiruka Chidia Maduekwe officially assumed office as the new State Project Coordinator.
The formal handover ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, saw the outgoing Acting Project Coordinator, Mr. Onyenweaku Prince C., transfer leadership to Dr. Maduekwe in the presence of staff and stakeholders.
In his remarks, Mr. Onyenweaku expressed gratitude to the NEWMAP team for their support during his tenure, noting that the project had undergone a successful transition phase and is now fully ready for implementation.
He recalled that he assumed office in December 2025 and commended the collective efforts of staff in advancing the programme, describing the progress made as “remarkable.”
“I appreciate everyone for your assistance and support throughout this process. Today, I officially introduce our new Project Coordinator and assure her of our full support to succeed,” he said.
Onyenweaku also thanked Governor Dr. Alex Otti for appointing Dr. Maduekwe, expressing confidence that her leadership would yield greater results in the coming years.
In her acceptance speech, the new Project Coordinator, Dr. Nkiruka Chidia Maduekwe, described her appointment as a profound responsibility and pledged to lead with integrity, transparency, and collaboration.
She expressed deep appreciation to Governor Otti for the opportunity to serve, noting that the administration’s vision has created avenues for meaningful contributions to addressing environmental challenges in the state.
“This opportunity is accepted with utmost humility, fully conscious of the significance of this office. I remain committed to meeting and exceeding expectations,” she stated.
Dr. Maduekwe commended NEWMAP staff for their dedication over the years, particularly in tackling erosion and protecting vulnerable communities, stressing that their efforts have brought hope and resilience to affected areas.
She emphasized the need for teamwork and innovation in addressing environmental threats, including erosion, climate change, and displacement of communities.
“We are the frontline defenders and agents of lasting change. We must work as a unified team across all departments to deliver sustainable and climate-resilient solutions for Abia State,” she added.
The new coordinator also acknowledged the support of the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Philmon Asonye Ogbonna, whose leadership she said has provided direction and stability for the project.
In her closing remarks, the Head of Administrative Department, Mrs. Ndukwe E.A. Victoria, assured the new coordinator of the staff’s commitment and readiness to work collaboratively to achieve the project’s goals.
The NEWMAP programme in Abia State focuses on tackling erosion, improving watershed management, and building climate resilience in vulnerable communities across the state.
