NCDC Unveils Health Strategy, To Leverage Public Health Informatics

A significant step towards strengthening the nation’s health security has been taken with the announcement made during the NCDC Health Security Partners meeting on November 21, 2023, ABNTV learned.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revealed its ambitious strategy and execution plan for 2023–2027 as a critical step to strengthen Nigeria’s health infrastructure and enhance its defenses against health emergencies.

The recently introduced plan, with the theme “Vision to Action” is in line with the ministerial agenda and ranks amongst health security as the fourth pillar. It reflects the agency’s resolve to expand health security initiatives across the country and embodies the SASS spirit of being Strategic, Ambitious, Working with Speed and Scale.

After reviewing the 2017–2022 strategy at the end of its term and considering its prior successes and lessons learned, the NCDC adjusted its tactics. With a focus on cross-cutting, high-quality public health informatics to support its activities, this new strategy places a priority on digital transformation.

One significant change in the approach is the increased emphasis on collaborating with state and municipal governments to strengthen subnational health security. A deliberate effort to improve coordination and synergy among stakeholders is indicated by the creation of the Subnational Support Department.

Furthermore, in line with international best practices, the revised approach strengthens the Department of Planning, Research, and Statistics by providing them with improved resources and instruction to advance monitoring, assessment, and learning inside the organization.

Key players from the public and commercial sectors were present when the NCDC’s top management revealed the full paper that outlined the strategic and execution plan. The blueprint is supported by a strong performance management system that encourages departmental and divisional collaboration and invites developmental partners to work together on joint projects.

Fundamentally, the goal of the NCDC is still the same: “A healthier and safer Nigeria through the prevention and control of diseases of public health importance.” With the help of seven strategic goals, 41 objectives, and 225 related activities that are carefully planned to produce specific results over the following five years, this vision is translated into a mission.

NCDC is resolute in fulfilling its role as Nigeria’s national public health institute, as demonstrated by this unveiling. Guided by research and managed by a competent workforce, the agency is prepared to lead the charge with a purpose centered on evidence-based prevention, integrated disease surveillance, and response using a One Health strategy.

With the introduction of this innovative approach, Nigeria’s public health environment enters a new era and is set to become healthier and more resilient to changing problems and new health risks. The NCDC is continuing to advance with its steadfast commitment to safeguarding Nigerians’ health.
