NANS Calls On FG To Amend Constitution Regarding Diaspora Voting

The National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora (NANS-Diaspora) has called on the federal government to fast-track constitutional amendments that would allow Nigerians living abroad to participate in elections.

Chris Fayomi, president of NANS-Diaspora, made this appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of enabling diaspora voting starting with the 2027 elections.

Fayomi highlighted the significant economic contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora, noting that remittances have hit record highs of over 23 billion dollars in a single year. He stated, “This implies about a 5 percent contribution to Nigeria’s GDP. Yet, we remain disenfranchised and excluded from the democratic process in national decision-making.”

He continued, “Hence, this call is to rightfully request our democratic access to vote as Nigerian citizens living abroad.”

The NANS-Diaspora president pointed out that other African countries have successfully implemented diaspora voting.

“Diaspora voting has been successfully exemplified by other African countries, and as such, the Nigerian government should embrace this monumental stride that empowers its citizens abroad to lawfully vote for their leaders.”

He further explained, “In simple terms, if we contribute to the economy via our resources, we must have a say in who governs us.”

Fayomi reiterated the belief of NANS-Diaspora that allowing diaspora voting would strengthen democracy, promote transparency, enhance accountability, and give Nigerians abroad a meaningful voice in shaping their country’s future.

“In fact, the beginning and the end of renewed hope is the inclusion of Nigerians in the diaspora as electors.”

The association also urged the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), NIDCOM, NIDO worldwide, and other key stakeholders to focus on establishing the necessary legal and logistical frameworks to make diaspora voting a reality.

“The leadership of NANS-Diaspora reiterates its commitment to mobilising Nigerian students and young professionals worldwide to support electoral reforms and ensure greater civic engagement from the diaspora community,” Fayomi concluded. (NAN)
