As part of activities marking this year’s Mothering Sunday by the Catholic community, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu on Sunday made a donation of clothing materials and cash to Widows and vulnerable women in his constituency.

ABN TV reports that the donation by Hon. Chukwu, representing Bende North constituency is in an effort to give the beneficiaries a new lease of life.

Our correspondent gathered that no fewer than 40 Widows and vulnerable members of Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) at St Joseph’s and St Michael’s Catholic churches, Alayi and Ugwueke, all in Bende Local Government Area benefitted from the gesture.

The lawmaker also offered financial support to the women organiastions in both churches.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu said the gesture is part of efforts to identify with mothers especially the vulnerable among them, adding that it was important to give back to society.

Chukwu, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said that the gesture had nothing to do with politics.

He said “It is in my programme to visit at least two churches in my constituency every two months and support them.

“I use the opportunity to also find out how they are responding to government policies, as well as inform them to take advantage of various social intervention programmes of government.”

Responding, Mrs. Ann Elendu, a former President of CWO at St. Joseph, thanked the lawmaker for his kind gesture and prayed that God would guide him.

Also, Rev. Fr Joseph Kalu, the Parish Priest of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, said that Chukwu had demonstrated the teachings of Jesus Christ by visiting the poor and the vulnerable.
