Lekki Toll Gate Killings: My Heart Bleeds, Prof. Ibe Weeps

The Chancellor, Gregory University Uturu, Prof. Gregory Ibe has expressed sadness over the killing of protesters at Lekki toll gate in Lagos by armed military personnel.

While calling for investigation and prosecution of those who took part in killing unarmed protesters, Prof. Ibe doubles as chairman of the committee of proprietors of private universities in Nigeria, said the extrajudicial killings are being taken too far.

Prof. Ibe in a statement issued on Wednesday by Sleek Ogbonnaya Ogwo was quoted to have said, “My heart bleeds at the level of casualty arising from a peaceful protest conducted by our children aimed at drawing attention to cases of brutality and other forms of wrongdoing by security agencies. While grieving for all the casualties, as a teacher and critical stakeholder in the education sector, I am most pained by the unfortunate loss of Anthony Okechukwu aka Tonycruz, a young student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, who was allegedly gunned down during the peaceful protest at Lekki toll plaza. This is extrajudicial killing taken too far and justice must not just be done but must be clearly seen by all and sundry to have been done. Young lives definitely do matter. I, therefore, call for thorough investigation by relevant authorities into the circumstances that led to this avoidable tragedy and subsequent prosecution of all accomplices found culpable”.
