Lagos Govt Urges LASU Unions To End Strike, Calls For Dialogue

The Lagos State Government has called on the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) to end their indefinite strike, assuring that the welfare of both staff and students remains a top priority.

The appeal comes as academic and administrative activities at LASU remain disrupted following the commencement of the strike on Friday, July 31, 2025. The JAC — comprising ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NASU-LASU, and NAAT-LASU — launched the industrial action in protest over unresolved issues concerning staff welfare and salary payments.

In a statement released on Monday by the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Mamud Hassan, the state government confirmed it had received formal communications from the unions and acknowledged their concerns.

Hassan noted that high-level meetings had taken place, involving key stakeholders including the State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, aimed at addressing the unions’ demands. He added that prior agreements were made between union leaders and government representatives to suspend any disruptive action to allow room for continued negotiation.

Also commenting, the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, appealed for calm and cooperation from all unions involved. He reiterated the government’s commitment to finding long-term, peaceful solutions and emphasized that the door remains open for constructive dialogue.

“In light of the ongoing indefinite strike, the government is earnestly appealing to the leadership of JAC to reconsider their position and call off the industrial action,” the statement read in part.

“The continued suspension of academic and administrative operations not only disrupts the university’s academic calendar but also jeopardizes the future of our students—who are the core purpose of the institution.”

The government reassured all stakeholders—including students, parents, and university staff—that efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy and maintain industrial harmony at LASU.

“The Commissioner pleads for peace, understanding, and cooperation from all parties involved,” the statement continued.

“Despite the mounting demands on government resources and the unique challenges of managing a growing megacity like Lagos, efforts to adequately fund LASU have not waned.”

The state government expressed optimism that with continued dialogue, mutual understanding, and a spirit of collaboration, a resolution that benefits all parties can be achieved swiftly.
