Kyiv came under a major pre-dawn assault on Friday, according to Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, as AFP journalists reported a series of explosions shaking the Ukrainian capital.

Klitschko confirmed on Telegram that air defence units were actively repelling a “massive enemy attack,” with at least two people injured in the eastern Dniprovsky district. Reporters described tracer rounds streaking through the night as drones were targeted and multiple anti-missile systems were engaged.

A fire erupted on the roof of a five-storey residential building in the Solomyansky district, while emergency teams responded to several calls for medical assistance in Desnyansky and Shevchenkivsky districts. Another blaze was also reported in the Podilsky area.

Moscow — which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — has intensified strikes on Kyiv in recent months, increasingly targeting energy infrastructure, rail networks, and civilian neighbourhoods.
