Kano Gov Pledges To Tackle Decades-Long Water Crisis

Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has instructed the Ministry of Water Resources to guarantee Rano Town, which has experienced water shortages for many years, a sustainable and continuous supply of water.

The governor gave the directive while receiving the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Umar, who paid him a Sallah homage at the Government House, Kano, on Thursday.

Yusuf commended the emir for his unwavering concern for the welfare of his people and assured him that the government is taking concrete steps to address the water crisis.

“We want to inform you that on the issue of water supply, we have made significant progress. I have directed the Commissioner of Water Resources to engage experts to tap water from Tiga Dam to supply Rano Town,” the governor stated.

He further revealed that arrangements have been made to construct boreholes in collaboration with the local government despite the challenging rocky topography of the area.

“We will use advanced surveying techniques to detect water aquifers beneath the rocky terrain and ensure a steady supply of water,” Yusuf assured the monarch.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, environmental development, education, and women and youth empowerment.

He also extended his condolences to the Emir of Rano over the gruesome murder of Kano indigenes in Uromi, Edo State.

The governor also commended the Emir for his role in calming tensions and reassuring the affected families that justice will be served.

“Had it not been for the wise intervention of the Emir, only God knows what could have happened,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Earlier, the Emir thanked Governor Yusuf for the ongoing developmental projects in the Emirate and urged him to continue addressing the water supply challenges.

“We appreciate your efforts in education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and the timely payment of retirees’ gratuities,” the Emir said.

He also commended the governor for acting on complaints regarding the five-kilometre road project, which led to the replacement of the contractor with a more competent one.

“We are pleased to inform you that the project is now making significant progress,” the emir added.
