Judiciary Workers Shut Down Benue Court Over N75,000 Minimum Wage

Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Benue, have locked down the state high court over failure to implement the new minimum wage.

Our correspondent who visited the high court in Makurdi observed members of the union barricading the gate and preventing entry into the premises.

The action, according to the assistant secretary of the union in the state, Jooli David, was a result of the non-implementation of the N75,000 new minimum wage to members.

David said that the union had on Friday issued notification of indefinite strike action over non-payment of the new minimum wage.

The state government had begun the implementation of N75,000 new minimum wage for workers in the state from the end of November.

The union which claimed to be following the directive of the national body and that of the Nigeria Labour Congress to embark on indefinite strike action as of December 2, noted that the state chapter of the union had no option but to embark on a strike from December 6.

The union in the state had addressed a letter to the state governor, titled, ‘Notification of Indefinite Strike Action Over Non-Implementation of New Minimum Wage”

David said the leadership of the union would be meeting with the head of service later in the day over the issue.

When contacted, the state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Terungwa Igbe, said the union was informed of the strike but declined to give the reason for the strike.
