Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Names New US Ambassador

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter as Israel’s next ambassador to the United States.

Leiter, a US-born, previously served as chief of staff in the finance ministry.

He also held positions as deputy director general in the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.

Leiter’s son was killed last year in the Gaza war against Palestinian militant group, Hamas while serving with the Israeli military.

Netanyahu, in a statement on Friday, said, “He is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics.”

Leiter’s appointment came three days after former President Donald Trump was elected to a second term as U.S president.

Trump’s victory was celebrated by many Israelis because of his strong support for Israel.
