IPOB Dismisses Umahi’s Claim Of Ongoing Talks For Kanu’s Release

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have vehemently denied recent statements by Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, claiming that negotiations are underway for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a strongly worded statement, IPOB described Umahi’s remarks as “reckless, false, and contemptuous”.

Speaking through its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group rejected what it termed “laughable propaganda” and “insulting narratives” suggesting that Kanu is seeking a conditional release from the Nigerian government.

“There is no negotiation whatsoever that involves Mazi Nnamdi Kanu accepting any so-called ‘conditions’ from the Nigerian government. None. Absolutely none,” IPOB stated.

Kanu has been in detention since 2021 after what IPOB describes as his “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya. The group emphasized that he is not interested in compromise or rehabilitation but remains steadfast in his demand for a United Nations-supervised referendum to determine the future of Biafra.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a political mercenary, not a job seeker, and not a saboteur. He is a freedom fighter whose only demand is the right of Biafrans to determine their future through a plebiscite,” the statement continued.

IPOB also highlighted the alleged harsh treatment Kanu has endured in detention, including extended solitary confinement, the loss of both parents during his incarceration, and ongoing legal struggles, which it referred to as “judicial terrorism”. The group insisted such a man “will not grovel for release under ridiculous conditions”.

The statement also criticized Simon Ekpa, a controversial figure associated with the Biafran cause, claiming his so-called “Biafran government in exile” has collapsed after he reportedly admitted in a Finnish court that he is merely a content creator.

“Let no one be deceived—Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will never abandon the struggle. His freedom must come through justice, not media manipulation or political gimmicks,” IPOB stressed.

The group warned Minister Umahi and other government officials against spreading “false hopes”, insisting that only a UN-supervised referendum could resolve the Biafran agitation.

“The Nigerian state is only deepening its crisis by continuing the illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Injustice will only breed more resistance,” the statement concluded.
