Renowned security expert and political figure, Sir Chikwe Udensi, has praised Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for his efforts in restoring confidence in governance, particularly through regular salary payments and visible infrastructure projects. However, he also raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the state’s contracting processes.
Speaking on ABN TV’s Political Perspective, Sir Udensi noted that Governor Otti has made commendable strides since assuming office, especially in areas where previous administrations failed.
“He pays salaries. He builds roads. That’s something to commend,” Udensi said.
He acknowledged that Governor Otti’s administration represents a positive shift in Abia’s political direction, describing the transition as a move “from bad to good.” However, he stressed the importance of going beyond good governance to achieve the best outcomes for the people.
Despite the progress, Udensi expressed serious reservations about the cost of infrastructure projects being executed under the current administration. He cited examples of road contracts allegedly awarded at inflated rates.
“Some six-kilometer roads are costing over ₦36 billion. That’s not honest,” he said, calling for greater fiscal responsibility and openness in the awarding and execution of public contracts.
Sir Udensi urged the Otti administration to strengthen transparency mechanisms, adopt competitive bidding, and involve civil society in monitoring public procurement.
“Governance is not just about building roads. It’s about doing so with integrity and ensuring public funds are used efficiently,” he added.
He emphasized that sustainable development in Abia State must be driven by transparency, accountability, and citizen participation, not just infrastructure and public relations.
The remarks come as the Otti-led government marks over a year in office, with rising public expectations for ethical leadership, prudent financial management, and open governance.
Sir Udensi concluded by urging the people of Abia to remain vigilant and to continue demanding honest and impactful leadership from their elected officials.
“We’ve seen progress, yes. But we must not stop there. Let’s aim for the best. That starts with accountability.”
