Insecurity Grips Enugu Communities As CMF Raises Alarm

The escalating insecurity in Enugu State and neighbouring areas took center stage at the 21st Annual Conference of the Nsukka Diocesan Christian Men’s Fellowship (CMF), where Christian fathers and community leaders issued a strong appeal for immediate and sustained government action.

The conference, held from June 27 to 29, 2025, at Emmanuel Anglican Church in Unadu, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, brought together delegates from across the diocese under the theme “As for Me and My House: Passing the Faith to the Next Generation” (Joshua 24:15).

In a communiqué released at the close of the three-day event—signed by Rt. Rev. Dr. A.E. Agbo (JP), Bishop of Nsukka; Sir Robert Agbo, Diocesan CMF Chairman; The Ven. Prof. Ikem Okoye, CMF Chaplain; and Prof. Chuma Okeke, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee—the fellowship expressed deep concern over increasing violent attacks in parts of Enugu and Benue states, particularly in Ibagwa-Aka, Edem Ani, Ezeagu, and Eha-Amufu.

Condemning what they termed “heinous killings”, the group called for urgent and strategic government intervention.

“We commend the Governor of Enugu State for his ongoing efforts, but we urge him to adopt more proactive and forceful measures to end these persistent threats to life and property,” the communiqué read.

The fellowship also encouraged local communities to take ownership of their security through the formation and proper training of vigilante groups to flush out criminal elements hiding in forests and remote settlements.

Beyond issues of security, the conference addressed a range of societal concerns, including the erosion of family prayer life, the surge in domestic violence, and the growing moral decline associated with masquerade practices. These cultural displays were described as economically disruptive and morally regressive.

The CMF applauded the Enugu State Government for recent legislation aimed at curbing idolatrous practices masquerading as cultural traditions, reaffirming the fellowship’s commitment to upholding spiritual and moral values in society.

On the home front, Christian fathers were urged to reclaim their roles as spiritual leaders, restore family devotions, and ensure the transmission of Christian values to the next generation. The communiqué also emphasized the importance of financial discipline, gender equality, and promoting agriculture as a pathway to economic resilience and national recovery.

In a strong call to action, the conference challenged Christian men, government leaders, and community stakeholders to rise to their responsibilities in restoring peace, promoting stability, and upholding spiritual integrity in society.
