The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that Imo, Jigawa, and Sokoto States recorded the highest average retail prices for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, in April 2025.
According to the NBS’s latest PMS price report released on Tuesday, residents in Jigawa paid the highest average price at N1,588.50 per liter, followed by Sokoto at N1,567.84 and Imo at N1,550.00.
This contrasts with the March 2025 data, where Jigawa (N1,700.00), Kaduna (N1,650.00), and Cross River (N1,563.86) topped the list of states with the highest petrol prices.
The NBS stated: “On state profile analysis, Imo State had the highest average retail price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), at N1588.50, Jigawa and Sokoto States were next, at N1567.84 and 1550.00, respectively.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Yobe, Kwara, and Osun recorded the lowest average prices.
“Conversely, Yobe, Kwara and Osun State had the lowest average retail prices for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), at N970.00, N1014.85, and N1042.49 respectively,” the report added.
In terms of regional data, the South East recorded the highest average petrol price, while the South West paid the least.
“Lastly, on the zonal profile, the South East Zone had the highest average retail price of N1341.71, while the South West Zone had the lowest price of N1138.64.”
Despite high prices in certain states, the report showed a marginal decline in the national average petrol price, with a 0.52 percent decrease from March to April 2025.
“The average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) for April 2025 was N1239.33, indicating a 76.73 percent increase compared to the value recorded in April 2024 (N701.24).”
“Likewise, comparing the average price value with the previous month (i.e., March 2025), the average retail price decreased by 1.77 percent from N1261.65,” the NBS concluded.
