Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has said he made money at a young age from trading on palm oil and fish as a student of University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID Borno State.
Speaking on Arise TV breakfast show monitored by ABN TV on Thursday, Orji Kalu former governor of Abia State said he discovered that palm oil was lucrative in Maiduguri, a situation that made him buy the product from the Eastern part of the country to sell in Maiduguri during holidays.
According to Kalu, while going back to South East, he will buy dry fish from Baga in Gamboru Ngala local government of Borno and sell in the South East to make money.
He said he later built a furniture company in Maiduguri from where he supplied tables to River Niger Basin Authority, a business that became viable, making him a giant in furniture business.
The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial district said he competed with companies like Santana furniture’s and others in the business.
“When there was a border problem between Chad and Nigeria, Buhari was the GOC at the war the sparked off at the moment in Jos and Babangida was the Director of in Army. He moved from Lagos to Chad.
“Luckily I ran into both of them and that is how I knew both of them. When this war continued, I started to supply food to the soldiers at the war front then, my company was in charge of that” he said.
He noted that when there was a problem in University of Maiduguri, him and seven others were suspended.
According to Kalu, the University led by Prof. Jubril Aminu recalled him but he declined, saying unless all the students who were suspended along with him are recalled, he will not resume studies. This he said he did as leader of the suspended students.
He said he went to Lagos to start dealing on military equipment and armament.
Later, according to him, he started importing sugar, rice and other items in Lagos, and rose to become one of the largest sugar importers.
He said making money for him is an art.
