Ahead of his formal reception into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 3, Bayelsa Governor Senator Douye Diri stated his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was made in the state’s best interest. Speaking at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day in Yenagoa, Diri said the move, though not fully understood by some, aims at unity and development.
The Governor highlighted ongoing projects, peace, and security as reasons for gratitude and emphasized that politics should foster development, not division. Governor Diri pledged to continue uniting the state for progress.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the event, praised Bayelsa’s unity as key to its progress and encouraged continued support for Diri’s administration. Minister of State for Petroleum Senator Heineken Lokpobiri called Diri a unifier, noting the timing of his political shift as vital for Bayelsa’s influence at the federal level.
Niger Delta Development Commission MD Dr. Samuel Ogbuku described Diri as a “godsend” for his development efforts and prayed for continued wisdom. Thanksgiving Service Highlights Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission preached on gratitude, reminding attendees of God’s constant support.
Officials including Senator Konbowei Benson, Bayelsa elders, and other dignitaries praised the governor’s achievements and called for unity among Bayelsans.
The event drew prominent figures such as the Deputy Governor, lawmakers, traditional rulers, former governors, clergy, and top government officials, reflecting strong support for Bayelsa’s leadership and future.
